Sweet - much maligned
Looking back now what a bloody awesome group they were. Very disrespected by the industry but fuck me they had some cracking songs.

Great time for music, the 70s

They are appearing at a local venue near me soon. Not sure how many are original members though.

Brian and Mick no longer with us, so I guess just Steve and Andy?

Re: Sweet - much maligned
Just looked up, apparently according to Wikipedia there's a Steve Priest Sweet AND an Andy Scott Sweet. The Andy Scott one is appearing near me, Steve Priest now lives in America so maybe his tours there?

Re: Sweet - much maligned
I had a reunion with some old schoolmates and one of them claimed that he was an original member of Sweet when they started out as a rock group. I think he said they called themselves Sweetshop or something.

He says he left when the management changed their style because he wouldn't play 'pop' or dress himself in "glam" suits. His whole life could have been very different....

I was having this kind of conversation at work a while back.. A lot of people wont admit to liking certain bands/music through sheer snobbery. For instance, Mud's 'When the cat crept in' is an absolute stormer of a track but they were another band who wern't taken seriously.

Wizzard was the best of that type of music, Roy Wood wrote some killer songs

Angel Fingers is a great song, Roy Wood is a very clever bloke and a talented multi musicianist.

Hold on,let me get me tin hat.

'Let me in,the Osmonds is another blinder from that era, when the horns and strings kick in towards the finale is spine tingling stuff.

Shit groups like this is why Punk came along to save the music business.

There's room for everything and what exactly did punk save? Lets face it punk churned out as much shit as every other genre. I'm no fan of rap or (modern) r&b but that dint man its shit just coz i dont like it. Plenty on here have stated cant stand the Beatles but i'm one of those that think they havnt been lauded enough. Its all subjective,we all have varying tastes.

I understand Steve Priest had a US based version of The Sweet for a while, and Andy Scott has kept the European Sweet going for a long time. Still do very well in Germany apparently!

Current drummer Bruce Bisland is top bloke and a top drummer. I got to know him when he was playing pubs with various Statetrooper and Praying Mantis folk.

Old NWOBHM fans may also remember him as the drummer of Weapon (who are also still going as Weapon UK). Weapon supported Motorhead on the Ace Up Your Sleeve tour.

Ask Danny Baker what he thinks of that statement.

Glam boyband designed for girls: didn't play on their own records, didn't write their own hits. If that's your "thing", dive in.

Next up, Boyzone: The Glory Years

Punk rock was a media invention that didn't really exist.

Re: Sweet - much maligned
geoffpikey - you couldn't be more wrong. Although Chinn and Chapman wrote a lot of their early hits, The Sweet played on their records and wrote the B-sides as well as later A-sides.

I saw them play a few times around '73-'76 and fuck me they could play and were loud 'n' heavy too. Slade and Status Quo were equally heavy. I saw Black Sabbath a few times too and around '74-'76 they sounded lame and toothless compared to bands mentioned above. I'm sure The Stoat will chime in here to back me up....please!

Theres a good 20 min docunentary on YT. All 4 of them seemed decent blokes, like saying thank you to the driver as they got out of their limo. They didnt have it easy pre fame days, they served their apprenticeship no doubt.
